These only cost 10%-20% of the typical cost of all other housing solutions, whether that be shelters, apartments or traditional tiny home communities. The latest housing report from Housing Solutions, shows that Tulsa needs to spend $2.5 billion on housing in the next decade (page 10 of report below). The Mayor announced a $500 million initiative for housing and a new low barrier shelter in the next year. How much does a shelter cost to build, $20 million or more? These transitional tiny home communities are an amazing savings to the city and tax payers. It makes the most economical sense.
There is an immediate need for housing right now. Counts show 1,063 people are homeless in Tulsa, and a 40% increase in those sleeping on the streets, although the true numbers are far greater than this. This does not include the 870 emergency shelter beds and 2,730 units needed in the years to come, highlighted in the latest housing report for Tulsa. Once a location is made ready and product ordered, it can be delivered and set up in 3 months. Also, note that the land does not require near as much work and prep time as normal. This can be set up on a vacant parking lot. We can realistically locate land and have a community up and running in several months.
As mentioned above, on any given night there are over 1,000 people sleeping on the streets in Tulsa. Shelters and programs are already overrun leaving no room. The newest housing report shows Tulsa needs to create 2,730 units for people transitioning out of homelessness and 870 emergency shelter beds, (page 5 of report). See story below to see how it can be done. When someone says they are ready for change and want to get off the streets, the wait is usually 4 to 6 months and most people do not last that long. Transitional Tiny Homes provide an immediate, no-wait solution. When someone says they are ready, they can be immediately housed in a safe environment and program until permanent housing is established.
